_Bronchitis
Acute or chronic bronchitis is among the most common ailments. This is caused by viruses, abetted by factors such as smoking, wet-cold weather and air pollution. Symptoms start with a burning and constricted feeling in the chest, irritated coughing, dryness in the mouth and throat and general weakness.
The acute stage is accompanied by an increased coughing impulse, shortness of breath, fever and strong secretion of stringy phlegm. Chronic bronchitis is in addition characterized by asthmatic breathing. Infection of the lung or pleura is a danger. Antibiotics are useful only if bacteria are involved. Most infections of the respiratory passages are viral, however. Furthermore, every fifth German today is immune against conventional antibiotics (Kosm. Praxis 04/2006).
On this topic, TCM says:
TCM sees bronchitis as a disturbance of the lung function cycle which regulates the Qi, or the energy of the entire body. The phlegm blocks the lung Qi, which has a weakening and lasting effect on the entire immune system. If the outside factors such as wind-cold intensify, the Qi of the milt and kidneys could also be reduced, which may lead to ear problems, incontinence, digestive problems and prolapse of the spinal disk (slipped disk).
In the case of Ms. Cao F. from Peking, the disease was overcome after a week by acupuncture along different points of the lung meridian such as Lu 7, and drinking 0.2l Chinese medicinal herb tea daily. Since the lung is a Yin organ and is in direct contact with the Yang organ large intestine, the acupuncture points Di4 and Di11 were in this case also treated.
