_Yin and Yang

In accordance with traditional Chinese medicine, meals should therefore always comprise a balance of Yin and Yang food. If this balance is not maintained, a principle may obtain too little or too much energy, blocking the flow of Qi.

In accordance with the traditional Chinese view, this could lead to diseases. To cure the patient, the excess of one energy must be removed and balanced with the opposite energy.

If a deficit of energy must be compensated for, a targeted «energization» or supply of energy could help to create harmony. There are various possibilities to achieve this, such as taking herbal medicines with corresponding energy qualities, maintaining special diets, acupuncture or acupressure, Shiatsu.

Concepts of disease and causes of disease in traditional Chinese medicine. The ten organs known to traditional Chinese medicine are allocated to an element in pairs (according to Yin and Yang):

Because the organs correspond to the elements, the two described cycles in accordance with traditional Chinese medicine are also applicable to the course of a disease. In this way, fury can cause heart problems in accordance with the causative cycle: The energy of the element wood (liver) gives sustenance to the element fire (heart). The element wood can be unbalanced by continuing fury and become excessively strong.

The excess in energy of the wood element (the liver) is transferred to the fire and thereby to the heart, which is now under increased load. In the positive cycle, however, the imbalance of the wood element disrupts the control of the element earth and thereby the milt or the pancreas. This could lead to digestive problems in the body. A medical practitioner practicing traditional Chinese medicine therefore does not treat symptoms of heart disease and digestive problems directly, but tries to balance the energy of the liver based on the two circulatory systems.

In accordance with traditional Chinese medicine, the five elements and their two underlying cycles are an expression of the interconnection of all organs and all possible disorders within a functional circle. In complex diseases with several symptoms, this viewpoint has the effect that several disorders are seen in relation to one cause for a disease and that in this way the cause can be treated instead of the symptoms.
