History of the most important feature in Bernkastel-Kues.
That would be, for example, the “Bernkasteler Doctor” feature, about which history writes as follows:
Archbishop Boemund 11 of Trier lay dying in his mountain castle above Bernkastel.
Many doctors tried to heal the old master yet no-one could save him.
Boemund had already taken quantities of tea and herbal drinks as well as bitter medicine; it was in vain.
Then he let it be known that whoever could ban his tiresome fever should come to help him. He would be sure to receive a large reward.
At the same time, Gerhard Vogt von Hunolstein (1359 – 1372), an ageing knight, lived in his castle in Hunsrück. It was said that he was a brave man who defied illness.
In spite of his advanced age he was strong, his joints were supple and a glow in his face suggested exceptionally good health.
Whenever this knight felt weakness in his old bones, or when an illness approached, a particular drink, the Bernkasteler wine which he had personally cultivated, came to the rescue.
He took a hearty gulp of this, because that was important.
When the knight heard of Boemud’s illness he contemplated - and remembered his ever reliable cure.
He journeyed straight to the sick man, taking along a vat of the best of the old wine.
Boemund was startled when he saw the vat, thinking it would again be some bitter medicine.
But the knight laughed, took the roundish vat from his shoulder and decanted this wonderful medicine into Boemund’s beaker. Whilst pouring the wine, it exuded a spicy aroma that spread throughout the room.
Boemund then eagerly took the beaker and emptied it to the last, without objecting.
The wonderful treatment immediately took effect and he was ever grateful to the knight.
His words referring to his recovery were as follows:
“My dear Sir von Hunolstein, your health-giving grape blood is the best doctor; therefore wine and mountain shall be named “Doctor” for all times.
Thus the name of this feature came about.
